Essential Functions of Position

The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 24,000 students of which 56% are Latinx, 10% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% are African American, 23% are White, 1% are American Indian/Alaska Native, and 6% are multiracial. FCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the student it serves.

Providing instruction in Air Conditioning, on the Fresno City College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:

  • Teaching subject areas in Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and Environmental Controls. Typical courses include instruction in:
    • Safety, hand tools, and use of instruments;
    • Basics of mechanical refrigeration; refrigerants, evacuation, charging, and recovery;
    • Basic and advanced electricity, single and 3 phase power, motors, controls, and control strategies;
    • Airflow measurement;
    • Use of psychrometrics as a diagnostic tool;
    • Gas fired (natural and LP) heating systems;
    • Flame control technologies;
    • Heat pumps;
    • Resistance heat;
    • Uniform Mechanical/Plumbing Code and National Electrical Code as related to HVAC/R;
    • Basic sheet metal fabrication;
    • Residential duct system layout and design;
    • Air conditioning and refrigeration system installation; and
    • Technician preparation for HVAC/R certification exams.
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff;
  • Participating in course and curriculum design;
  • Developing, constructing and coordinating the use of instructional aids;
  • Participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
  • Participating in recruiting activities;
  • Duties may include assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus, and large group instructions classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree AND two years of directly related professional experience;

    OR

  • An associate degree AND six years of directly related professional experience;

    OR

  • A valid California Community College credential;

    OR

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

In addition, all applicants must have a valid California driver’s license.

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need of equity-minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Extent of teaching experience;
  • Extent of related work and professional experience;
  • Extent of training and practical experience in all aspects of HVAC/R and Environmental Controls;
  • Evidence of the ability to involve students in practical applications of instruction as it is related to the industry;
  • Extent of experience working with students of various ages, cultural, economic and education backgrounds;
  • Extent of knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of professional growth;
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Membership in professional HVAC/R organizations;
  • The extent of additional licenses and/or certifications including: EPA Section 608, Type 1 & 2, California Licensed Contractor C20 and/or C38;
  • North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Certification in the following areas: Air Conditioning, Heat Pumps, Gas Furnace, Air Distribution;
  • Earned refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) status by passing the: Certificate Member Exam (CM) and/or a Certificate Member Specialist Exam(s) (CMS);
  • Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association (RETA); Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) and/or Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO);
  • To a lesser extent, Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) Industry Competency Exam (ICE) and/or ESCO entry-level technician examinations passed;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its missions and goals.

Salary and Benefits

Starting rates are $45.49 – $61.78 for lecture, $38.67 – $52.55 for lab, and $38.30 – $52.05 for non-instructional. Sick leave accrual is based on assignment hours.

Additional Information about the Position

NOTE: Fresno City College’s current equivalency policy reads as follows:

  • 10 years of verifiable journeyman level experience;

    AND

  • EPA section 608 Type 1 & 2
    • Type 1 System charge of 5 pounds of refrigerant or less
    • Type 2 System charge greater than 5 pounds of refrigerant

    AND

  • North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Certification in a minimum of two of the following areas:
    • Air Conditioning
    • Heat Pumps
    • Gas Furnace
    • Air Distribution

    Or as a substitution to the NATE certification, have an earned Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) status by passing the Certificate Member Exam (CM) and/or a Certificate Member Specialist Exam(s) (CMS)
