Background Checks

Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. Information reported by the background check will not automatically disqualify you from employment.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The successful candidates will take exciting and leading technical roles in one of the following ARPA-E EVS4ALL projects. The project titles are:
  1. Fast-Charging, Wide-Temperature, Low-Cost, Durable Batteries Enabled by Cobalt- and Nickel-Free Cathodes and Cell Engineering.
  2. Fast-Charge, High-Energy-Density, Solid-State Battery.
The focus of these positions will be electrochemical modeling of high-energy cells. A particular emphasis will be on high-rate charging of this cell, at several temperatures. The successful applicant will develop detailed physics- and chemistry-based transient mathematical models for cell charge and discharge, based on the coupled thermodynamic, kinetic, and transport processes taking place in the cell.

In addition, the successful applicant may contribute to the design of experiments for parameterization of material-level (e.g., electrolyte transport properties) and cell-level (e.g., separating electrode- and particle-scale) processes. Methods such as EIS, GITT, pulsing, and others may be used.

The position will be in the Albertus research group in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland. Professor Albertus has extensive experience developing electrochemical models and simulating battery performance. Relevant publications are available at his Google Scholar page.

Applicants do not need to be US citizens. The start date is flexible, with a goal of early to mid 2024.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in engineering, the physical sciences, or applied math.
  • Significant experience with mathematical modeling of a physical or chemical system with coupled processes. Applicants should have significant experience formulating and solving systems of coupled partial differential, ordinary differential, and algebraic equations.
  • Experience modeling battery performance, degradation, and/or other behaviors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • A strong publication record demonstrating originality, technical depth, and the ability to conduct research both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including preparation of presentations and reports.
