The Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance (NAFSA) is a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of Indigenous leaders dedicated to restoring food systems that support tribal self-determination and community wellness.


NAFSA’s mission is to support Native communities nationally with advocacy, education, and networking as they revitalize their Indigenous food systems. NAFSA brings together proven strategies with innovative thinking as we support ethical economic development by promoting expanded local food production that renews natural resources and enhances traditional cultural activities to mentor a new generation of Native food sovereignty activists, chefs, farmers, and practitioners.


POSITION SUMMARY:
The Executive Director (ED) provides oversight and management of all aspects of the organization and works to further the mission and vision as directed by the Leadership Council.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Provides executive oversight for the organization.
  • Provides leadership in maintaining a commitment to mission and vision.
  • Co-creates an equitable, collaborative organizational culture that upholds indigenous values.
  • Assists the leadership team with development and implementation of strategic goals.
  • Hires, supervises, and provides performance reviews for Directors and management staff.
  • Provides direct management and oversight for Finance, Fundraising, Human Resources, and Administration.
  • Ensures the organization achieves its revenue and fundraising goals.
  • Oversees development of annual fundraising plan and supervises grant submissions and compliance, e.g., SOW, budget, narrative reporting.
  • Develops strong relationships with funders and performs outreach as needed.
  • Ensures the organizational health of the organization by developing and maintaining a balanced budget, and developing an employee compensation package, including medical and retirement benefits.
  • Oversees administrative support systems to ensure effective functioning.
  • Serves as the primary staff liaison with the Executive Committee (EC) and the Leadership Council (LC), governing bodies of NAFSA.
  • Develops strong, working relationships with the EC and LC.
  • Works with administrative staff to schedule meetings and provide support to EC and LC.
  • Provides timely board reports, including financial, fundraising, and staffing updates.
  • Represents the organization at conferences, workshops, meetings, and other events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience managing staff including Finance, Fundraising, Human Resources, and Administration.
  • Experience working with Boards towards a mission statement and aligning work to meet organizational objectives.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, including leadership roles, resource allocation, human resources modeling, work distribution and coordination, and management of people and resources.
  • Creative, demonstrably committed, and enthusiastic about equity and justice for Indigenous food sovereignty.
  • Background and familiarity with agriculture, Indigenous food sovereignty, and rural and diverse land-based tribal communities is strongly preferred.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting short term deadlines while advancing multiple projects with long term goals.
  • High level of professionalism, exceptional interpersonal skills, and strong communication skills capable of articulating vision to diverse audiences.
  • Highly organized self-starter who is comfortable in a fast-moving organization.
  • Innovative thinking, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
  • Highly focused and able to work independently while managing multiple tasks and projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Responsive to change and ability to be flexible and serve as change agent.
  • Ability to provide leadership, analyze situations and data, solve problems, handle, or recommend appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to present complex and technical information to a general audience to facilitate decision-making.
  • Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, entrepreneurial organization that values collaboration and kinship.
  • Successful record for fundraising and donor development.
  • High degree of financial competency, experience, ability to oversee complex annual budgets.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to quarterly staff retreats and occasional program events in tribal communities.


EDUCATIONANDEXPERIENCE:
Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree, in Business, Finance, or a related field
Education Preferred: Master’s Degree, in Business, Finance, or a related field
Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in executive or senior non-profit management positions, including a successful record for achieving goals in a growth-oriented organization. Experience working with fund accounting, budgets, policy development, grant compliance, and contracting, is a plus.


Computer Skills: Knowledge of various technology platforms such as non-profit accounting and QuickBooks, Google Suites, Microsoft Office, and Monday.com.


Certificates & Licenses: Driver’s license
