This position serves as a health care interpreter for our patients and staff who are in need of language services. You'll work in a dynamic environment in a medical setting with new challenges every single day and work alongside a collaborative team of other interpreters with diverse backgrounds. As the Interpreter, you will convey health care information between monolingual speakers while complying with all Interpreter Services and Michigan Medicine policies and procedures. You will follow all aspects of confidentiality set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements regarding patient confidentiality. You will also need to have a passing performance of competencies listed in the National Standards of Practice and the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care according to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). You will need to travel within our main hospital and its satellite locations including those outside of Washtenaw County.
Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to participate in committees and complete projects as assigned.

Responsibilities*
- Facilitate delivery of language services to Limited English proficient (LEP) patients and English-speaking providers
- Render services through a combination of remote and on-site interpretation
- You'll work in a dynamic environment in a medical setting with new challenges every single day and work alongside a collaborative team of other interpreters with diverse backgrounds
- Interpret for over-the-phone (OPI), video (VRI), and in-person assignments
- Work with other members of the Interpreter Services staff to coordinate appointments
- Provide sight and written translation of Michigan Medicine documents for patients as needed
- Document patient encounters according to department standards and comply with all Michigan Medicine and Interpreter Services guidelines and procedures
- Communicate Interpreter Services resources and protocols to hospital staff and patients
- Adhere to the National Standards of Practice and the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care according to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC)
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
- Associate's degree in a healthcare field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Oral and written fluency in English and Arabic
- Certificate from a nationally recognized Medical Interpreting course encompassing at least 40 hours of training or willingness to take and pass such a course before starting the position.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Must pass a 3rd party Language and Interpreting Assessment.
- Reliable means of transportation and a valid USA driver's license are required for this job.
Desired Qualifications*
- National medical interpreter certification (CHI or CMI)
- Health care interpreting experience preferred
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proven customer service abilities
- Experience using scheduling databases
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
