Essential Job Duties
The Research Specialist will play a key role in the establishment and management of cover crop breeding projects at various stages within the breeding pipeline. This role ensures the seamless execution of research protocols and supports the growth of innovative agricultural practices.
Responsibilities
- Oversee cover crop breeding trials, adhering to established protocols and ensuring consistency across field sites.
- Perform tasks essential to trial maintenance, including field design, planting, fencing, weeding, data collection, and the preparation, drying, and weighing of plant and seed samples.
- Analyze plant and seed samples to support breeding objectives and ensure accuracy in findings.
- Collaborate with the field team lead to manage and delegate tasks to field staff, maintaining efficient operations and data integrity throughout the breeding process.

This position is stationed at BARC – Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, MD.
Other Responsibilities
- Participation/membership in Tri-societies.
Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions (cold, heat, humid, rain, pollen)
- Must be able to stand and kneel, for extended periods of time
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with farming equipment
- Degree in plant breeding, crop science, horticulture science, or related field.
Required License or Certification
- A valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
- A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
Valid NC Driver's License required
