Essential Job Duties
We are seeking a skilled Facilities Engineer to provide expertise in the design, construction, and operation of campus facilities. This role requires advanced engineering knowledge in design, construction, and operational methods to resolve complex building system challenges and ensure efficient functionality. This position plays a critical role in supporting the university’s infrastructure and ensuring optimal building system performance across campus.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide expert technical and engineering support for analysis, troubleshooting, and improvements of complex building systems, including HVAC, mechanical, steam, plumbing, life safety, and lab support systems.
- Review Facility Modification requests and new/renovated designs to ensure adherence to Campus Design and Construction Guidelines.
- Inspect major capital project construction to confirm compliance with university standards and specifications.
- Serve as a key member of the campus facilities review team, evaluating and prioritizing facility expenditures through the Campus Integrated Priority List, ensuring alignment with the Facilities Division Strategic Resource Management initiative.
- Manage complex building system repair projects, with a focus on research-intensive campus facilities.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience in the operations, construction, renovation or maintenance of buildings and building systems to include experience in the direction or planning of building repairs and maintenance projects or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to lift up to 90+ pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with a solid understanding of compliance standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive, progressive experience in the field with a deep understanding of work methods, process techniques, resource requirements, and safety protocols necessary to deliver high-quality services.
- In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in one or more building mechanical trades.
- Journey-level experience in building trades.
- Prior experience in facilities maintenance and operations.
- Project management experience is highly preferred.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
