Responsibilities*

Support the lab in its general function in a wide variety of technical work, getting involved in different research projects.  Oversee day-to-day lab operation, including the ordering of chemicals, biological reagents and supplies, updating the lab inventory; prepare for and attend EHS and biosafety lab inspections.  Design and conduct experiments as part of large research projects, according to discussions with the PI. Develop new research methods, suggesting options for improving the quality and/or efficiency of ongoing protocols.  Train new lab members in using lab equipment and protocols.  Analyze data produced in different experiments, including statistical analysis and graphing; utilize data generated in experiments to suggest modification to protocols and techniques.  Work independently to consolidate and present research data in lab meetings and conferences.  Lead the writing and submission of scientific manuscripts as a co-author with others and the PI. Care for rats in animal experiments, including surgery procedures and daily handling/treating the animals.  Supervise other lab members, including exempt and non-exempt personnel and students.

Required Qualifications*

Master's degree and 5 to 6 years related experience. Supervisory experience required. As a team member of a research lab the candidate should have a positive outlook and be self-motivated to carry our experiments alone or together with other lab members.  Work independently and propose solutions to problems. Be meticulous in keeping/updating research records. Be very organized   Excellent attendance record.

Desired Qualifications*

Previous experience in microbiology and animal studies is preferred. Knowledge of School of Dentistry policies and procedures.  Knowledge of University of Michigan policies and procedures.

Additional Information

This is a 1 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon performance and funding. The salary range quoted for this position reflects 100% effort (40 hours per week).
