The Position
This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions include the following:
1. Provide effective classroom instruction in Hospitality Tourism Management using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter including on campus, hybrid, online and off-site instruction
2. Prepare and grade all class assignments, and/or examinations and projects
3. Advise, assist and evaluate students, evaluate learning outcomes and maintain regular office hours
4. Participate in program activities including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials
5. Contribute to the development of program policies and procedures
6. Maintain accurate and timely student records as required
7. Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
8. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
9. Knowledge of the use of technology in teaching
10. Participation in departmental and college professional activities and/or committees is welcomed, but not required
11. Skill in respectful, tactful and sensitive interaction with people who are diverse in their academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds
12. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs
Minimum Qualifications
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications
b. Degree Equivalence:
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
b. Academic Background Equivalence:
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
b. Professional Achievement Equivalence:
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Have recent community college or lower division teaching experience in the area of Hospitality/ Hotel and Restaurant/ and Food and Beverage Management/Culinary Arts
2. Expertise and professional experience in field of course(s) to be taught, including, but not limited to: Hotel and Restaurant Management, Food and Beverage Management, Event Planning, Hospitality Law, Hospitality Accounting and Cost Control and Food Safety and Sanitation
3. Current Servsafe Manager Certification
4. Membership in a professional organization related to the Hospitality Industry
i. Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:

5. Competencies related to: curriculum & course development; teaching & learning theory; information resources & evaluating student outcomes; and, assisting student to develop critical thinking skills

7. Knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and subject matter

9. Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community
10. Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of San Mateo Community College District
11. Understanding of contemporary equity and diversity concepts and issues in a community college setting
12. Familiarity with, willingness and ability to use multiple teaching methods including computer-based learning

The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
