Description
APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR TEMPORARY HOURLY SHIPPING & RECEIVING CLERK POSITIONS FOR THE 2024-2025 FISCAL YEAR.
Immediate openings. These are temporary, part-time, hourly assignments. Hours are not guaranteed, and assignments are based on the needs of the department. The position reports to the Purchasing Director and Warehouse Worker.
Position is responsible for performing routine shipping & receiving duties to include processing mail and packages, data entry, and surplus activities.

Position Duties & Responsibilities
Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
- Receive materials ordered from suppliers and UPS and other carriers; compare and verify receiving documents to purchase orders; return damaged and pre-viewed goods, or as requested;
- Process outgoing mail daily for US Post Office pick up; process bulk mail and large packages for delivery directly to the US Post Office;
- Deliver printed materials to campus personnel; pick up and deliver printing from off campus vendors;
- Rearrange purchased items to accommodate campus needs within the shipping and receiving area; operates self-propelled lift trucks, hand trucks, dollies, and other loading and moving equipment to move/deliver purchased items;
- Assist with college surplus process activities;
- Files purchase orders, directives, requisitions, receiver's reports and correspondence in online file system; works within the college’s enterprise business system to enter and track receipts;
- Performs duties involved in maintenance, arrangement and cleanliness of the warehouse/worksite and its equipment;
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent; six months of full-time experience in retail clerking, warehousing, stock keeping, shipping, or receiving; physical ability to do required work; operation of mechanical handling equipment; OR a combination of education, experience and training that would provide equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Physical and Environmental Work Conditions:
This position performs work in an environment that requires lifting up to 50 pounds, shoving, pulling, pushing, and carrying heavy objects; working at a computer; periodically in inclement weather; possibly moving strong chemicals and cleaning agents; as well as stooping, bending, reaching and walking. Must use ladders including, but not limited to, step ladders. Must have good hand dexterity; good vision, which includes good depth perception and field of vision. Must be able to follow and receive instructions and supervision. Must be able to have the physical ability to handle environmental stresses, emergency situations, deadlines, a variety of duties and working alone or with others. Work environment includes wet and slippery surfaces both inside and outside of buildings.
Person must have the ability to wear safety equipment which may include safety glasses, face shields, dust masks, ear plugs, earmuffs, hard hats, back support belt/brace, wrist supports, elbow supports, knee pads, gloves, protective clothing, rain gear and protective foot-wear. Carry the college cell phone while on duty and ensure that the phone is charged and operational; ensure that work is done in an efficient and safe manner.
Essential Elements:
Operate a forklift. Drive an electric cart.
Supplemental Information
Compensation, Benefits and Work Schedule:
Effective July 1, 2024, hourly rate is $20.61 based on Range 4, Step A of the Bellingham Technical College General Teamsters salary schedule.
Benefits include paid sick leave earned in accordance with Washington State law and Initiative I-1433. Sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program. Potential flexible schedule; no additional benefits.
The shift hours generally occur during the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday and are considered on call. Hours are generally up to 4 hours per day with max of 16 hours per week.

Background Check: This position is subject to a background check and final offer is contingent upon passing a criminal background check satisfactory to the college. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude the placement into the new position but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the new position.
