Scientific Software Developer

Job Description

SCIENTIFIC SOFTWARE DEVELOPER, Haystack Observatory, will be responsible for operation and management of production level processing of data from scientific instruments, including radar and other techniques that study the Geospace environment in near-Earth space; maintenance of existing software; development of new software using best practices and modern source control tools and understanding of basic science and error analysis practices; frequent collaborative work with a variety of US and international scientists in the Geospace field to archive remote sensing data in the CEDAR Madrigal database, hosted at MIT Haystack; and actively participate in Haystack science and technical discussions, group efforts, and publications in a research facility whose mission is to carry out cutting edge research in the field of radio science through the development and deployment of innovative new instrumentation. Research at Haystack includes studies of the solid Earth, cryosphere, climate, atmosphere, oceans, space weather and ionospheric monitoring, and ultra-high-resolution imaging of super massive black holes.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Physics; a minimum of two years of related experience, which may include experience gained as an undergraduate; and experience and interest in programming; a solid background in Python development, as well as experience with web development, database management, solid documentation and communication skills, and software development in a Linux environment. PREFERRED: Experience with other scientific languages in common use for science, including Matlab, C, and Fortran, along with SQL systems and web development using Django; and interest in expanding your knowledge to other development and management efforts of other remote sensing systems.
