Prestage Poultry ScienceAbout the Department
The main purpose of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science is to support the North Carolina poultry industry and community through extension, research, and teaching activities. Poultry is the largest income-producing commodity in the state and the Prestage Department of Poultry Science works together with different producers, commodity organizations, allied industries, and other state agencies in educating students and the public, and in distributing information gleaned from research and extension activities at the university level.
The Department educates and conducts research and extension related to physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, immunology, nutrition, toxicology, animal well-being, genetics, management, and feed milling, with the ultimate goal of improving the production and wholesomeness of poultry (broilers, eggs, turkeys) as a food product.

Essential Job Duties
There are mounting challenges facing animal agriculture and protein production. The world is facing the task of feeding more people, optimizing the use of land and inputs, while dealing with unpredictable weather cycles, a challenging regulatory environment, and dynamic consumer demands. We need to ensure the world continues to benefit from safe, affordable, and high quality protein sources in the future. It is imperative to explore the untapped potential in the genomes of poultry and their microbiomes, invent new management systems, improve feed and water utilization, rethink how to feed birds, discover novel ways to make feed, and develop superior logistics and supply chain systems. Moreover, we need to do this with a deep understanding of consumer demands while protecting flock welfare and providing economic viability for producers. Clearly, it will take an interdisciplinary approach.
The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) at North Carolina State University is recruiting a visionary scientist who is interested in being part of our efforts to develop the scientific breakthroughs it will take to meet the challenges of the coming decades. This is a bold goal, and as such, the faculty and administration of PDPS have intentionally developed this job description without a single specific discipline or expertise in mind. Rather, we are looking for a scientist who has communication skills, leadership skills, and commitment to working collaboratively to make their case as to why their program would have the greatest potential to expand and add value to the current efforts of the PDPS.
In its 100-year history, the PDPS has gradually worked to develop a comprehensive infrastructure that supports all aspects of the integrated poultry production system. Our facilities include a feed mill, space for flocks of pullets, layers and broiler breeders, grow-out facilities for broilers and turkeys with expanding digital resources, processing facilities, as well as capabilities in further processing and waste management, among other existing and planned assets. This research-scale replica of a poultry integration system allows scientists to design experiments that reflect the complexities of protein production. Our strong relationships with the layer, broiler, turkey, feed milling, and allied industries add additional capabilities for joint research opportunities. However, we also recognize that meeting grand challenges will likely involve improving and/or developing new infrastructure. We expect that the individual hired into this position will join the other faculty in PDPS to develop and pursue new ideas for the use of existing facilities, imagining additional future capabilities, and procuring ways to materialize these new resources.
Position Details
We are inviting applications from candidates with expertise in any of the following broad of interest to the department: behavior, bioinformatics, disease management, endocrinology, feed milling, genetics, microbiology, muscle biology, nutrition, physiology, processing, production, reproductive physiology, welfare, or other relevant disciplines. Those who are experts in broilers, broiler breeders, laying hens, turkeys, game birds, or feed milling, or who are willing to focus their work with any of the listed organisms, will be considered for this position. We aim to recruit independent researchers that can function well in a team setting to join our faculty either as an assistant or as an associate professor. The position will carry 70% research and 30% teaching responsibilities in a 9-month appointment. The successful candidate will develop an externally funded research program that is cutting-edge and relevant to the poultry industry. A candidate that has developed a nationally recognized program will be considered for appointment at the associate professor level. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching two courses annually in any area of poultry science or supporting disciplines.
